Nicotine Pouch Ingredients: What's Actually in the Can

Most “ingredients” content in this space is thin — a one-line mention of “nicotine and fillers.” Here’s the fuller picture, broken down by function.

The nicotine itself

Nicotine in a pouch comes from one of two sources:

Either way, the nicotine itself has the same pharmacological effects and addiction potential — the source doesn’t change how it acts in your body.

The filler

Pouches need physical bulk to hold their shape and carry the nicotine — this is usually microcrystalline cellulose, a plant-fiber material also used widely in food and pharmaceutical products as a bulking agent. It’s what gives the pouch its texture and lets it sit comfortably against your gum.

The pH system

This is the part most “ingredients” articles skip, and it matters more than people realize. Raw nicotine exists in different chemical forms depending on pH — an acidic environment holds nicotine in a “protonated” form that absorbs more slowly, while an alkaline environment shifts it toward “free-base” nicotine, which crosses the oral mucosa faster. Manufacturers add pH-adjusting agents (commonly sodium carbonate or bicarbonate) specifically to push the pouch toward the free-base end of that range, so nicotine reaches your bloodstream faster. This is also why two pouches with identical mg labels can feel different — pH engineering affects how much of that labeled nicotine you actually absorb, and on what timeline.

Flavoring and sweeteners

Flavor compounds are typically the same category of food-grade flavoring agents used in gum, candy, and other consumer products — mint and menthol compounds, citrus oils, fruit and coffee flavor compounds, sometimes synthetic flavor blends for less “natural” profiles like energy-drink or dessert flavors seen in some Nordic brands. Sweeteners (often xylitol or similar sugar alcohols) are added for taste and, in some formulations, to help with moisture control.

Humectants and stabilizers

Moisture-retaining agents keep the pouch from drying out or feeling like paper in your mouth, and stabilizers help keep the product consistent from can to can and over its shelf life.

What’s deliberately NOT in it

Unlike snus, tobacco-free nicotine pouches contain no tobacco leaf — no plant material, and none of the tobacco-specific nitrosamines that come specifically from processing tobacco leaf. What independent testing has found

Because formulations aren’t standardized across the whole category and public ingredient disclosure varies by brand and market, independent (non-industry) laboratory analyses of some tested products have found trace heavy metals and a small number of potentially carcinogenic compounds — at levels far below cigarette smoke, but not zero.
