How Long Should You Keep a ZYN In? (First Time, 3mg vs 6mg)
“How long do you keep a ZYN in?” is one of the most common questions from new pouch users. The official answer is simple, but it helps to understand what’s actually happening in the pouch over that time.
The official answer: up to one hour
ZYN’s own instructions say to place one pouch between your upper lip and gum for up to one hour, and that pouches are single use only. Most other brands give similar guidance, often “up to 60 minutes” or “20–60 minutes”.
“Up to” is the key phrase. There’s no minimum you have to reach, and many people take the pouch out well before an hour.
What happens during that hour
- Nicotine starts releasing straight away. A 2025 lab study measured nicotine release in the first five minutes and found tobacco-free pouches released similar amounts to tobacco pouches, despite containing about half as much nicotine.
- Blood nicotine peaks around the one-hour mark. In a 2022 study of a 4mg pouch kept in for 60 minutes, blood nicotine peaked at a median of about 1 hour.
- Flavor often fades before the hour is up. Many users report taking the pouch out once the flavor is gone. The pouch may still release some nicotine after that.
Our nicotine pouch effects timeline goes into more detail.
Your first time
If it’s your first pouch:
- Use a low strength, 3mg or lower. See our beginners guide.
- Start with 10–15 minutes, not an hour. You can always leave the next one in longer.
- Expect a tingle or slight burn. That’s normal (see why ZYN burns).
- Take it out immediately if you feel dizzy, nauseous, sweaty or your heart races. These are signs of too much nicotine, and they usually pass within minutes of removing the pouch.
- Sit down for your first one. A light head-rush is common for new users.
3mg vs 6mg: does strength change the timing?
The instructions are the same for every strength. But a higher strength delivers more nicotine in the same time, so:
- with lower strengths, keeping a pouch in for longer is less likely to feel too strong
- with 6mg and above, a shorter time may be plenty, especially at first
If a stronger pouch feels too intense, taking it out sooner is the simplest way to lower your dose. You don’t need to switch to a lower strength straight away. See our strength guide.
Can you keep a ZYN in longer than an hour?
It’s not recommended. After an hour:
- the pouch has little flavor left
- it keeps releasing some nicotine, which adds to your daily total without much benefit
- long contact in the same spot increases gum irritation. Rotate sides and don’t sleep with a pouch in (see oral health).
And don’t reuse a pouch. They’re single use only.
When to take it out early
- you feel dizzy, nauseous, or sick
- you get hiccups or heartburn (see pouch hiccups)
- the burn is painful, not just a tingle
- you’re about to eat, drink hot drinks, or brush your teeth
Bottom line
ZYN says up to one hour, and that’s a maximum, not a target. Nicotine starts releasing straight away, and blood nicotine peaks around the hour mark. First-timers should use a low strength and start with 10–15 minutes. With stronger pouches, taking the pouch out sooner is an easy way to lower your dose. Take it out straight away if you feel dizzy or sick, and never sleep with a pouch in or reuse one.
