Nicotine Pouches vs. Snus: What's the Difference?
Nicotine pouches are often described as “the next generation of snus,” and that’s historically accurate — but they’re a different product, not just a rebrand.
The core difference: tobacco leaf
Snus contains real tobacco leaf, heat-treated (pasteurized) rather than fermented like traditional chewing tobacco, then ground and portioned into pouches. Nicotine pouches contain no tobacco leaf at all — just nicotine (tobacco-derived or synthetic), plant-fiber filler, flavoring, and a pH adjuster.
Why that matters practically
Because snus contains tobacco leaf, it carries tobacco-specific compounds and is regulated as a tobacco product everywhere, including inside the EU (where it’s banned outside Sweden under a long-standing exemption). Nicotine pouches, being tobacco-free, fall outside that specific EU tobacco framework — which is part of why their legal status varies so much by country. See our legal status tracker for details.
Taste and experience
Snus users often describe a more distinct tobacco flavor and a moister pouch. Nicotine pouches are typically flavored more like mints or candy (mint, citrus, coffee, fruit) and, in brands like ZYN, use a drier format that many users find less noticeable and easier to wear discreetly.
Are nicotine pouches “safer” than snus?
This is genuinely debated and not settled. The absence of tobacco leaf in nicotine pouches removes tobacco-specific nitrosamines that are present in snus, which some researchers point to as a potential safety advantage. But nicotine pouches are a much newer product with far less long-term research behind them than snus, which has decades of Swedish public health data. Availability
Snus is legal in Sweden and the US but banned in the rest of the EU. Nicotine pouches, being a separate regulatory category, are legal in significantly more places, including much of the EU — though as our legal tracker shows, that status is genuinely inconsistent and changing.
