ZYN Cans Are Going From 15 to 20 Pouches: What's Changing in 2026
If you’ve seen posts saying ZYN cans are getting bigger, they’re right. Philip Morris International (PMI), which owns ZYN, told investors in September 2026 that its core US ZYN cans will move from 15 to 20 pouches. Here’s what’s actually confirmed, what isn’t yet, and how it fits with the other changes to the ZYN range this year.
What PMI has confirmed
In an investor presentation at the Barclays Global Consumer Staples Conference on September 8, 2026, filed with the SEC, PMI listed this among its US plans:
Expanding U.S. ZYN range and aligning value proposition across ZYN portfolio with Q4 transition of 3mg and 6mg dry variants to 20 pouches/can
In plain terms:
- Which cans: the flagship dry ZYN in 3mg and 6mg, the classic ZYN most US users know.
- What changes: from 15 to 20 pouches per can.
- When: the fourth quarter of 2026 (October to December). Expect a mix of 15- and 20-count cans on shelves during the switch.
What isn’t confirmed yet
PMI’s filing doesn’t give a new price for the 20-count can. “Aligning value proposition” suggests PMI wants the per-pouch price to line up across the range. It doesn’t say whether the can price will stay the same, rise, or something in between. Prices also vary a lot by state because of taxes (see our state tax guide). We’ll update this post once 20-count cans are widely on sale and real shelf prices are known.
How it fits with the rest of ZYN’s 2026 changes
The pouch count change is one of several moves PMI has made in the US this year:
- ZYN ULTRA (June 2026). PMI’s Q2 earnings release describes ZYN ULTRA as 9mg and 11mg moist variants “at a lower price-per-pouch”. That makes it a different product from classic dry ZYN. Our dry vs moist explainer covers why that matters.
- New dry strengths (Q3 2026). PMI said it planned to add 1.5mg and 8mg dry variants alongside the existing 3mg and 6mg.
- FDA modified-risk authorization (June 30, 2026). The FDA granted MRTP authorization to 20 variants of the flagship ZYN range (see our explainer on what that does and doesn’t mean).
Put together, PMI appears to be building a clearer ladder: more strength options in classic dry ZYN, a stronger moist line in ULTRA, and a common 20-count can format.
How to compare prices when can sizes change
When the pouch count changes, the price per can stops being a fair comparison. Use price per pouch instead:
Price per pouch = can price ÷ pouches in the can
For example, a $5.00 can of 15 works out to about 33 cents a pouch. A $6.00 can of 20 is 30 cents a pouch, so it’s cheaper per pouch even though the can costs more. (These are illustrative numbers, not actual ZYN prices.)
This matters beyond ZYN too. Can sizes vary a lot across brands (15, 20, sometimes more), which is why our brand directory lists pouches per can for every brand. For how pouches compare with cigarettes and vapes on cost, see our cost comparison.
One thing to watch: using more because you have more
A bigger can is more convenient. But if you’re trying to cut down, notice whether having 20 pouches on hand changes how many you use a day. Our guides on how many pouches is too many and how to quit have practical tips.
Bottom line
It’s confirmed. PMI told investors on September 8, 2026 that US ZYN 3mg and 6mg dry cans will move from 15 to 20 pouches in Q4 2026, as part of lining up value across the ZYN range alongside ZYN ULTRA and new 1.5mg and 8mg strengths. PMI hasn’t published new prices, so compare on price per pouch once the new cans reach your local store. For the full ZYN lineup, see our ZYN brand page.
