How to Open a ZYN Can and Dispose of Used Pouches
New to ZYN and can’t get the can open? Not sure what to do with a used pouch? Here’s ZYN’s own guidance on opening the can and disposing of pouches.
This article is for adults 21+ who already use nicotine.
How do you open a ZYN can?
ZYN’s US FAQ describes three steps:
- Break the perforation on the side label (the seal).
- Twist the lid until the arrows on the top and bottom of the can line up.
- Lift off the lid.
The first time is the hardest, because you have to break the seal. After that, the lid twists and lifts more easily. If it won’t budge, make sure the arrows are exactly aligned before lifting.
Where do used pouches go?
Most ZYN cans have a waste compartment in the lid. ZYN’s UK guide says to place a used pouch “in the ZYN waste compartment underneath the seal on the lid of the container”, then move it to household waste when you can.
This lets you carry used pouches until you reach a bin, instead of dropping them on the ground.
How to dispose of used pouches
- Put them in the general trash. ZYN’s US FAQ says to dispose of used pouches “in your household or public waste container, and in accordance with local regulations.”
- Don’t flush them. ZYN’s UK guide says not to flush pouches “down the toilet, sinks or drains.”
- Don’t litter. Used pouches still contain some nicotine.
- Keep them away from children and pets. Even a used pouch can be dangerous if swallowed (see child swallowed a pouch and dog ate a pouch).
Are ZYN pouches biodegradable or compostable?
No. ZYN’s Swiss FAQ says the pouch and its contents “do not meet biodegradability standards” and should go in the general waste. The UK guide adds that although the pouches are made from cellulose, a plant fiber, used pouches can’t be recycled because they’ve been in contact with saliva. Don’t compost them.
Can you recycle the ZYN can?
Yes, in many areas. ZYN’s UK guide says the can is made of recyclable plastic and can go in household recycling or to a local recycling center. Empty it first. Check your local recycling rules, because they vary.

Bottom line
To open a ZYN can, break the side seal, twist the lid to line up the arrows, and lift it off. Put used pouches in the lid’s waste compartment, then in the general trash, never the toilet or drains. Pouches aren’t biodegradable or recyclable, but the empty can is recyclable in many areas.
