VELO vs VELO Plus: What's the Difference?

By PouchGuide Editorial Team · Published September 26, 2026

If you’ve shopped for VELO in the US recently, you’ve probably noticed two lines on the shelf: VELO and VELO Plus. They’re made by the same company, but they’re quite different products. Here’s how they compare.

The short version

VELO Plus is the newer US line from Modoral Brands, part of Reynolds American (owned by British American Tobacco). It launched in December 2024. Compared with original VELO, it uses synthetic nicotine, comes in higher strengths, has larger, moister pouches, and holds 20 pouches per can instead of 15.

What synthetic nicotine means

VELO Plus uses synthetic nicotine, made in a lab rather than extracted from tobacco leaf. Chemically, it’s still nicotine, with the same addictive and physical effects. Since April 14, 2022, the FDA has regulated products with nicotine from any source, synthetic included, as tobacco products. So “synthetic” doesn’t mean less regulated or safer. See our synthetic nicotine explainer.

Moisture and strength: why VELO Plus feels stronger

VELO Plus is both stronger on paper (6mg and 9mg vs 4mg and 7mg) and moister. Moist pouches generally release nicotine and flavor faster than dry ones (see dry vs moist pouches). Together, that makes VELO Plus a noticeably bigger step than the numbers suggest.

If you’re switching from original VELO, start with the lowest VELO Plus strength and see how it feels.

FDA status

As of the FDA’s list updated August 21, 2026, no VELO or VELO Plus products appear among the 43 FDA-authorized nicotine pouch products. The FDA’s page states that the products on its list are the only nicotine pouches that may be lawfully sold in the US. VELO products are nonetheless widely sold in US stores. For how that process works, and why it’s being sped up, see the FDA’s PMTA changes.

Which should you choose?

Bottom line

VELO Plus is BAT’s newer US pouch line: synthetic nicotine, 6mg and 9mg at launch, larger and moister pouches, 20 per can, and a disposal lid. Original VELO uses tobacco-derived nicotine in lower strengths and 15-pouch cans. As of August 2026, neither line was on the FDA’s authorized list. If you’re switching up to VELO Plus, start low, because the extra moisture makes it feel stronger.
