ZYN Top or Bottom Lip? Where to Put a Nicotine Pouch
Should a ZYN go under your top lip or your bottom lip? It’s one of the most common beginner questions, especially from people who used to dip, where the lower lip is the norm. Here’s the answer.
The official answer: top lip
ZYN’s instructions say to place one pouch between your upper lip and gum. VELO and other major brands give the same guidance (see our guide to using pouches correctly). Nicotine pouches are designed around upper-lip use.
Can you put a ZYN in your bottom lip?
Yes. It won’t hurt you, and the pouch still works. Nicotine is absorbed through the gum lining in either spot. But most people who try it notice a few drawbacks.
Why the top lip usually works better
- Less juice to swallow. Saliva collects in the lower part of your mouth. A pouch under the bottom lip sits in that pool, so more nicotine-laced saliva ends up being swallowed.
- Fewer stomach side effects. Swallowed nicotine can cause hiccups, heartburn and nausea. MedlinePlus lists these as side effects of overusing oral nicotine products (see should you swallow or spit).
- Less wasted nicotine. Nicotine that’s swallowed is largely broken down by the liver before it reaches your bloodstream, so less of the pouch’s nicotine is absorbed where it should be.
- More discreet. A pouch under the upper lip usually shows less than one under the lower lip.
Why some people prefer the bottom lip
- Habit, especially for former dip or chew users.
- Comfort, for some mouth shapes.
- Giving a sore spot a rest. Moving the pouch to a different spot can help when one area of gum is irritated.
If you use the bottom lip
- Use a lower strength or a drier pouch, which produces less juice.
- Don’t swallow constantly. Let saliva sit briefly, or spit discreetly if you need to.
- Take it out if you get hiccups, heartburn or nausea (see pouch hiccups and ZYN nausea).
Placement tips for either lip
- Tuck it high, between the lip and the gum, and let it rest. Don’t chew or suck on it.
- Rotate sides. Left, right, center. Using the same spot every time increases irritation (see why ZYN burns).
- Keep it to an hour at most. ZYN’s guidance is up to one hour per pouch (see how long to keep a ZYN in).
- Watch your gums. Sores, white patches or receding gums in the spot you use are signs to rest the area and see a dentist.
Bottom line
ZYN and other brands recommend the upper lip, and for most people it works best: less juice, less swallowing, fewer hiccups and less heartburn, and more of the nicotine absorbed through the gum as intended. The bottom lip still works, and is fine if you prefer it, especially with a lower-strength or drier pouch. Whichever you choose, rotate sides and keep each pouch to an hour or less.
