Does ZYN Contain Tobacco? Ingredients, Calories and Sugar
ZYN doesn’t contain tobacco leaf, but its nicotine comes from tobacco. ZYN’s UK site puts it simply: “The nicotine in ZYN is derived from tobacco but ZYN does not contain tobacco leaf.” Here’s what’s actually in a pouch.
Is ZYN tobacco-free?
ZYN describes its pouches as “tobacco-leaf-free”. Unlike dip or snus, there’s no ground tobacco inside, just a white filling. But:
- the nicotine is extracted from tobacco plants
- in the US, the FDA regulates ZYN as a tobacco product, and the FDA’s January 2025 authorization was a tobacco-product authorization
- the federal Tobacco 21 law covers nicotine pouches, so you must be 21 to buy them (see how old to buy ZYN)
So “tobacco-free” is accurate about the leaf, not about where the nicotine comes from. Some brands use synthetic nicotine instead (see what is synthetic nicotine?).
What’s in a ZYN pouch?
ZYN’s UK site lists:
| Ingredient | What it does |
|---|---|
| Nicotine | The active ingredient, derived from tobacco |
| Cellulose | Plant-based fiber that forms the filling |
| pH adjusters | Help nicotine absorb through your gums |
| Sweeteners (acesulfame K) | Sweetness without sugar |
| Flavorings | Mint, citrus, coffee and so on |
| Water | In regular pouches, not Mini |
Swedish Match, ZYN’s maker, says “all ingredients, apart from nicotine, are widely used in food products.” ZYN’s US FAQ says it uses a nicotine salt that is “more stable than the nicotine used in some e-cigs, vaping, and liquids.” See our guide to nicotine pouch ingredients.
Does ZYN have calories?
Almost none. ZYN’s US FAQ says there’s “less than 1 calorie per pouch.” That’s why a pouch doesn’t count as a meal in the calorie sense (see does ZYN break a fast?).
Does ZYN have sugar?
No. ZYN uses the sweetener acesulfame K, and its UK site describes its flavorings as containing no sugar.
Is tobacco-free the same as harmless?
No. The FDA said ZYN contains substantially lower amounts of harmful constituents than cigarettes and most smokeless tobacco. But it also stressed that its authorization “does not mean these tobacco products are safe.” Nicotine is addictive and raises heart rate and blood pressure (see is ZYN FDA approved? and addiction and tolerance).
Bottom line
ZYN contains no tobacco leaf, but its nicotine is derived from tobacco, and US law treats it as a tobacco product with a minimum age of 21. A pouch contains nicotine, plant fiber, pH adjusters, sweetener, flavorings and, in regular pouches, water. It has less than 1 calorie and no sugar.
