How Old Do You Have to Be to Buy ZYN? (US and Other Countries)
“How old do you have to be to buy ZYN?” is one of the most searched ZYN questions. In the US, the answer is simple: 21. Here’s how the law works, and what the rules look like in other countries.
United States: 21, everywhere
On December 20, 2019, a federal law raised the minimum age to buy tobacco products to 21. It’s known as Tobacco 21, and it took effect immediately.
According to the FDA:
- It covers all tobacco products, including cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, e-cigarettes, and non-tobacco nicotine products such as nicotine pouches.
- It applies to both stores and online retailers.
- There are no exemptions. The FDA’s FAQ says the law “does not provide any exemptions from the new federal minimum age of 21”.
Can you buy ZYN at 18?
No, not in the US. Some older state laws set 18 or 19, but the federal age of 21 applies in every state. Asking “how old to buy ZYN in Florida, Texas or Michigan” gets the same answer: 21.
Is there a military exception?
No. Some states used to let service members under 21 buy tobacco, but the federal law has no military exception. Active-duty troops still need to be 21 (see ZYN in the military).
Do stores check ID?
Yes. Under an FDA rule from August 2024, retailers must check photo ID for anyone under 30. So if you look under 30, expect to be carded, even if you’re well over 21.
Tobacco products also can’t be sold from vending machines in places where people under 21 are allowed at any time.
Buying ZYN online
The same age limit applies online. Reputable online retailers use age verification at checkout, and many also require an adult signature on delivery. A site that sells nicotine pouches without any age check is a red flag.
Why this matters
When the FDA authorized ZYN in January 2025, it noted that 1.8% of US middle and high school students reported using nicotine pouches in 2024, and said it would monitor youth use closely. Age limits are a key part of keeping nicotine away from young people (see youth use data).
Other countries
Minimum ages vary, and some countries restrict or ban pouches altogether:
- UK: until recently there was no legal minimum age for pouches. Under the Tobacco and Vapes Act, the age of sale is 18 from 29 October 2026 (see UK Tobacco and Vapes Act).
- Canada: pouches are regulated as a quit-smoking product. Only authorized brands can be sold, and only by a pharmacist, from behind the counter (see Canada).
- Australia: tightly controlled (see Australia).
- Some countries ban them entirely (see countries where pouches are banned).
Check the local rules before you travel (see traveling with pouches).
Bottom line
In the US, you must be 21 to buy ZYN or any nicotine pouch, in every state, in stores and online, with no military exception. Retailers must check photo ID for anyone under 30. Other countries set their own limits, and some ban pouches altogether.
